Upgraded Oracle Virtualization Tools

Recently, Oracle began shipping Oracle Virtual Assembly Builder and Oracle WebLogic Suite Virtualization Option. These two Java virtualization tools for WebLogic are expected to be an integral part of the new Sun software offerings, which are in the middle of being revised in order to make the best use of what Oracle already has available.

This release, on April 19, was the first release of a new Java virtualization application since it acquired Sun back in January.

Virtual Assembly Builder

Virtual Assembly Builder (VAB) is a suite of tools that’s purpose is to help deploy multitier enterprise-level Java apps quickly in virtualized environments. Accordingly, it allows java development access to a number of shortcuts for both configuration and provisioning, which is likely to make the VAB something of a hit.

In addition, VAB lets you connect and deploy a number of different types of assemblies, which can be combined together to make multitier applications. These assemblies (or “appliances,” as they’re often known) can each handle specific functions, including things like compliance or security.

WebLogic Suite Virtualization Option

This new tool takes the standard Oracle WebLogic Server with JRockit Virtual Edition, and makes it optimized for virtual environments. This combination allows oracle to increase application speed and make better use of hardware. Of course, because every implementation is different in terms of its performance, power and service level needs, there will naturally be some variation in its performance.

Because JRockit Virtual Edition is included in the WebLogic Suite Virtualization Option, that means that the server can run right on an Oracle VM without needing to rely on Unix or Linux.

These two new tools add a level of application awareness to the oracle WebLogic picture that wasn’t there previously. Accordingly, it allows developers to build the right appliances to match the specific needs of their implementations.
