5 Network Management Investments with a Big Payoff

network managementIT budgets are tighter than ever, but in some ways that’s actually all right. The rapid rise of virtualization technologies have increased the degree to which the IT function is able to automate its processes. These technologies have come along at the right time, and have given IT departments the tools they need to innovate and even increase service levels without having to spend more money.

One of the ripest areas for automation is network management. There are a handful of things you can do in your network management arena that will have an immediate, measurable payoff. They include:

1.    Implement NCCM tools and processes. There are a number of new tools and applications that will help you manage your Network Configuration and Change Management process. These tools give you faster access to change data, provided by quality discovery and monitoring automation processes. These tools let you take some of the work load off your top-tier network staff and offer it to your less-expensive staff, providing additional savings.

2.    Consolidate your management tools. Any given organization has redundancies when it comes to their management tools. Simply taking the time to examine and refine your portfolio will allow you to cut costs. In addition, it allows you to have a much more integrated IT function, and provides a broader view of your IT services.

3.    Focus on analysis over monitoring. Collecting data point information doesn’t do you any good when you’re just flipping through it with the naked eye. You need sophisticated analytical algorithms to do that sifting for you. You need network management products that can find the proverbial needle in your network data haystack.

4.    Boost application awareness. You need to be able to look at your network performance in the context of your applications, services, users and the user experience. By identifying which apps drive network utilization, you can devote appropriate network management resources to improving their efficiency.

5.    Fully utilize your tools. When it comes to network management, the tools at your disposal may offer plenty of potential in their own right. It’s worth a periodic functional review of your tools to see if they have applications and features that you’re not already using, and then putting those features to work for you.
