HP Storage Virtualization and Data Center Deduplication

Data explosionThe data explosion has caused IT departments and data centers of all shapes and sizes to experience a significant sprawl. In turn, this sprawl has pushed the IT function to the brink, and created a situation in which there are often multiple systems or applications that are essentially serving identical business functions. The task of deduplication – of eliminating unnecessary redundancies – can save you money and other valuable resources. Today, HP offers a number of Storage Virtualization solutions to specifically address deduplication.

At the forefront of HP’s efforts to help your company meet these challenges is the HP StoreOnce deduplication software. This software promises to offer a higher-performing and more scalable data center, all while reducing redundancies.

The first delivery phase of the HP StoreOnce system is in regard to backup. Specifically, it’s being released for the HP StorageWorks D2D backup systems. These scalable systems are available for small remote office backups all the way through a midsize data center sized implementation. The flagship product here is the HP StorageWorks D2D4312 Backup System. This solution gives you disk-based backup that is scalable, reliable, efficient and offers rapid restore. It also features the HP Replication Manager software as an option. This add-on lets you remotely replicate your storage for purposes of disaster recovery and off-site storage requirements.

The StoreOnce approach uses a number of technological innovations. Some of those include optimized chunking of data, locality sampling, sparse indexing and intelligent data matching. These technologies work together to reduce the resource overhead requirements, including things like I/O and memory use. They also help to reduce disk fragmentation.

One of the most significant aspects of HP StoreOnce is that it’s designed to be a single architecture that will allow an organization to pursue data deduplication from end to end. This is a significant advantage over deduplication vendors, which tend to offer point solutions. There is no need to implement several different deduplication solutions across the organization. This, in turn, reduces your costs as well as your systems management overhead, to say nothing of what it does for the efficiency of your data center.
