A Closer Look at IBM PowerVM

x86 virtualiaiztion diag resized 600Virtualization is key in the data center today. More than ever, data center managers, IT directors and CIOs are looking for ways to improve their virtualization systems, as well as for ways to transition more and more legacy systems into a virtualized environment.

No one will argue with you about the need for virtualization. Businesses are demanding more and more functionality from their IT departments. With every new function comes a new application, and with every new application comes a new server. Each new server carves out a piece of a data center that may already be at or near its capacity, creating a strain on your IT resources.

While vendors across the board offer up virtualization products, few suit an IBM-heavy environment quite like IBM’s virtualization line, PowerVM. PowerVM lets you consolidate your data center’s workloads onto fewer systems, which in turn increases your server utilization and reduces your costs. PowerVM is scalable in ways that virtualization solutions from some other vendors aren’t, and its security is at the top of the heap.

PowerVM offers you some very specific ways to improve your IT environment:

• You can consolidate multiple and diverse applications into a virtualized environment. You no longer need a standalone box for each and every business function supported by your data center.

• You can consolidate those applications across OS’s. You can run applications built for AIX, IBM I as well as Linux all on a single server.

• PowerVM lets you virtualize not just the server itself, but its components. You assign specific portions of processor, memory and even I/O resources. This allows you to increase your utilization greatly while reducing the costs of your infrastructure.

• With IBM’s virtualization solution, you can adjust the capacity of your virtual servers dynamically. That means you can respond to the demands of your business’ workload on the fly, allocating resources to high priority tasks and insuring that your applications run as smoothly during peak utilization as they do at other times.

• You can also reduce your planned downtime by using PowerVM. You can transfer currently running workloads between servers, allowing you to maximize availability.

If you’re an IBM shop that wants to dramatically reduce your data center footprint, control costs and maximize utilization, you need to give PowerVM a serious look.
