Do You Have These Hidden Virtualization Pitfalls?

Virtualization has rocked data centers all across the world. The huge potential that the technology offers in terms of cost savings, efficiency, management effectiveness, and even greening of the data center is significant. Virtualization promises to make significant improvements to the data center, and in many ways it pays off on that promise.

That being said, virtualization does have some hidden secrets. If you’re not careful, you can find yourself in a situation where your virtualized environment isn’t providing the kind of quality of service that you need to, or where it’s not truly giving you the cost savings it should. You need to be on the lookout for these hidden virtualization pitfalls:

•    Application performance pitfalls. It’s not uncommon at all to find that performance takes a downturn after virtualization. To be sure, virtualization provides all sorts of opportunities for higher efficiency and for better performance, but configurations have to be correct. You have to watch out for things like port or network parameters, firewalls access lists, rogue devices on the network, and configurations that don’t follow best practices. If something’s not set up completely or correctly, it can bring performance to a screeching halt.

•    Change process pitfalls. Effective virtualization requires implementation of effective change management procedures. Basic change management details such as proper configuration for destinations during upgrades or maintenance are key. This extends out to areas such as disaster recover sites, load balancing, and more.

•    Staff pitfalls. Virtualization should free up your IT staff to focus on core business issues. Unfortunately, a virtualized environment can create significant time wasters. For example, troubleshooting issues often involve multiple sources for logs or alerts. Auditing and compliance can become more complex, too. Even basic concepts like IP address assignment now have to be coordinated.

The way around these pitfalls, in each case, is automation. Automating your virtualized environment removes many of the concerns, and can keep change management, performance, and more all wrapped up tightly in one package. Automation empowers your troubleshooting, and manages those basic time-wasters that can wrap staff up for hours.  Capacity planning, as well, becomes a function of the environment, meaning that you can truly take advantage of all of the efficiency that virtualization provides without having to sacrifice performance.
