Businesses Choosing Private Clouds Over Public

Cloud computing has made great inroads when it comes to businesses

Cloud computing has made great inroads when it comes to businesses. More and more, companies are recognizing the power of the cloud to maximize their IT efficiency, and guarantee the kind of service levels that their users are demanding. However, most IT professionals currently consider private cloud services preferable to public cloud services by a margin of four to one. This is according to a recent survey of more than 1,000 IT professionals, and it paints an interesting picture of where we’re really at when it comes to utilizing the public cloud.

There were, essentially three issues why businesses are choosing private solutions over the public cloud:

  1. Public cloud security. The biggest concern for IT professionals when it comes to using the public cloud is security. Making that leap – where you place the security of your organization into the hands of a third party provider – is just something that’s hard to do. Add to that the fact that some cloud technologies don’t necessarily seem to offer the kinds of security you can do in-house, and you can begin to see why many are holding off.
  2. Cost of cloud solutions. Another interesting result of this particular survey was the issue of cost. Nearly 40 percent of the respondents said that cost was a major concern when it comes to using the public cloud. Interestingly enough, this concern was biggest for IT professionals who have not yet implemented cloud solutions. Among those who have implemented cloud solutions, however, 84 percent indicated that they were actually saving money by taking some applications to the cloud.
  3. Privacy and compliance. The issues of privacy and compliance ranked a distant third when it came to what concerned IT pros about the public cloud. Passing secure – and even regulated – data across a third party’s solutions creates a number of potential compliance issues. Most cloud providers are prepared to fully address those concerns, however.

Of those surveyed, two thirds aren’t using any cloud computing yet. However, only eight percent said that they weren’t considering it. Barring any dramatic or startling changes in the cloud computing world, It’s just a matter of time before most organizations are running at least some of their applications in the cloud.
