7 Ways to Green IT Beyond the Data Center

green itWe’ve made great strides in making data centers more efficient in terms of energy usage. Indeed, the data center is the place where the highest concentration of IT energy winds up being spent. That said, however, there are a number of important ways that companies and other organizations can continue to reduce their energy needs beyond just greening the data center.

Here are some ways IT can reduce its energy footprint:

  1. Focus in on print management. Duplex printing is a good start, but there are all sorts of other potential areas for efficiencies. Restrictions on color printing, implementing printing passcodes, and more can help reduce waste.
  2. Standardize. By implementing standardized technology solutions across an entire business, you can reduce procurement costs and eliminate systemic redundancies in IT.
  3. Consider thin clients. Thin client technology as an alternative to desktops can save significant amounts of power and reduce the carbon footprint. For example, one organization replaced around 8,000 desktops with thin clients and saved 630,000 kilowatt hours as well as 422 tons of carbon emissions in one year.
  4. Train staff for green operations. Helping inform all levels of management and staff in an organization about ways to green IT will have a dramatic effect on user behavior, which is the most unpredictable component to begin with.
  5. Prioritize your green initiatives. Many green initiatives provide a return on investment over the lifecycle, so focus on those first. Recognize the benefits of going green besides simple responsibility, and make business decisions around those benefits.
  6. Get your budget inline. Green initiatives won’t always result in a higher ROI. Indeed, in many cases, you’re going to have to find ways to come up with significantly higher capital investments. Aligning your company’s greening priorities and putting them in budget perspective is part of making it happen. Find ways to fit sustainability into your organization’s strategic plan, and the budget will fall into place.
  7. Get buy-in from senior management. Without support from above, green IT initiatives are bound to fail. Make sure that you have the support you need all the way up the chain, and you’ll have an easier time of it.
