A Look at New HP Storage Options

hpHP is one of the industry leaders when it comes to converged storage. There have been two recent product releases that demonstrate HP’s dedication to advancements in the storage arena, and that give customers new options and functionality. The P10000 3PAR Storage system offers greater capacity and support for both public and private clouds, while the new Peer Motion federated storage software lets administrators move workloads around between disks in cloud or virtualized environments.

Let’s take a look at each of these new solutions in turn:

The P10000

The P10000 is a new line of arrays that runs on the 3Par Generation Four ASIC from HP. There are two models right now – one that has two controllers, and one that supports up to eight controllers.

This product line will able to do automatic load balance both storage and computing capacity with a single click. This leads to higher performance and higher service levels all around. In addition, the speed at which capacity is automatically added when it’s requested by an application has improved by a factor of three. Provisioning becomes, then, a much faster and simpler process.

It’s also a much more efficient model. Those faster ASIC processors lower the amount of time that it takes to recognize unused capacity and reclaim it, too. HP is dubbing this the “nano reclamation engine.”

Peer Motion Software

Peer Motion lets you move data from HP storage systems of any sort to other HP storage. It integrates seamlessly with HP subsidiary storage systems 3Par and LeftHand. Like vMotion from VMware, this software lets you migrate data live on running storage systems that are actively supporting VMs – without any downtime for the application.

The potential applications for this software are exciting. For example, you might have an application that outgrows even its forecasted data requirements. You can simply redistribute it across multiple storage systems. You can also use it to bring a new storage system online or to retire an old one, or for thin provisioning.

When it comes to storage technology and storage management, these new products from HP demonstrate just why HP is an industry leader.
