4 Desktop Virtualization Imperatives

Server virtualization came about as a natural progression in the development of data center technology. Once we had the ability to start combining servers, it made immediate sense to do so. Client virtualization and desktop virtualization, however, weren’t as obvious in their potential. While there are some compelling benefits to both efficiency and security by exploring desktop virtualization, there are also some areas of concern that you’re going to need to address early on.

Here are four imperatives you need to follow if you’re going to make the right desktop virtualization decisions:

  • Establish specific, measureable goals. Work with your company’s business unites to identify ways to measure implementation goals, and to get support of management. These will vary greatly from one organization to the next.
  • Do your research. Review all of your technology options. Find out what others in your industry are doing in terms of desktop virtualization. Consider bringing in a consulting firm to help you understand the different options available and match them up to your specific needs.
  • Don’t skimp on testing. Get your business unit users involved in the testing stage. Make sure that end users are current on the various changes along the way. Test each step of your implementation. Work up a useful training program to be run concurrently with implementation. Watch user expectations and manage them well. Use testing and training as opportunities to engage and promote the benefits of client virtualization.
  • Measure and demonstrate true benefits. Measure your virtualization benefits in concrete business terms. Look at power savings, speed and efficiency of software distribution, help desk support times, and more. Observe and note intangible savings, as well, such as increased security. Put a hard number into cost savings, too.

Desktop virtualization isn’t for every organization, but it can benefit most. By identifying potential opportunities in your organization, designing an efficient and cost-effective solution, and bringing your user base on board, you can see significant benefits across the entire organization. You just need to keep these principles in mind to insure that your implementation goes as smooth as possible and that your business users are truly satisfied.
