Making Campus Networking Easier

Brocade, considered the best providers of Fibre Channel technology, launched its new vision for campus networking called Hyper Edge. This is built around its next-gen stacking technology. The main job of Brocade Hyper Edge technology is to ensure that administrators have a single oversight point for managing all Hyper Edge compatible switches in one network. It does so by establishing a single IP address for all the network switches enabling administrators to manage the network from a single level. In the future, this architecture can become even more dynamic using network virtualization techniques or OpenFLow.

Regarding campus networks, the extremely high-end ICX 6610 switch can now be combined with the ICX 6450 switches. This is because by using this Hyper Edge technology, all switches in a network can be run as one logical device. In simple terms, Hyper Edge technology stacks everything. To avail of this new technology without any additional license, you only need to access the Brocade FastIron 8.0 and download the latest software update.

The new technology also comes with the capability of integrating wireless LAN networks into the campus networking portfolio.  Teaming up with OEM giant Motorola, Brocade upgraded its switch software and Brocade Network Advisor and its network management platform to integrate Wi-Fi technology into its campus portfolio. This means, from now, network operators can manage both wired and wireless networks from one single console. The team-up also implies that trademarked Motorola features like wireless mesh, distributed AP forwarding and self healing access points will also be available in these revamped campus networks.

Last but not the least, Brocade also enhanced its campus switching line, mainly the ICX 6650, which is a 1.6Tbps, single rack unit switch with two different configurations - 64x10 GbE (Gigabit Ethernet) ports with 4x40 GbE ports and 56x10 GbE with 6x40 GbE ports. The reason is Brocade wants both campuses and data centres to eye the ICX 6650, which, when it hits the markets in June, will come at a starting price of $19,200. Brocade Hyper Edge Technology is meant to offer A-Z solutions for both mobile devices to data centers. This sets them apart from other vendors who fluctuate between the two extremes.
