SAP HANA is SAP’s implementation of memory-resident database technology, which is fundamentally different from the traditional databases, that we are all aware of, which implements disk storage mechanism. Due to its memory-resident nature, this can be deployed as an appliance or in the cloud. It is a fundamentally different technology that makes it a viable medium for performing real-time analytics, as well as deploy real-time applications. HANA is just a name, but there are various acronyms to it as well, due to its nature like High Performance Analytic Appliance.  There are five components within it, namely:

  1. HANA DB - the HANA Database.
  2. HANA Studio - the suite of Tools.
  3. HANA Appliance - the HANA DB, delivers on a certified partner’s hardware.
  4. HANA One - the HANA delivered on Amazon web services.
  5. HANA Application cloud - the Application based infrastructure.

There are occasions when the company has to go deep and broad within their data, to perform complex analytic operations, which most often has to be real-time. While traditional databases are split into OLAP for analytical operations and OLTP for transactional operations, SAP HANA performs complex real-time analytical operations quickly, storing data in memory. SAP HANA provides companies with fast, accurate, and reliable answers to their questions, thereby saving time and effort to transfer data from transactional database to their reporting database.

SAP HANA is not complex to understand. Anyone, who has the knowledge of a relational database and the basic understanding of SQL, can start with it. Similar to relational database, the data is stored in rows and columns. However, SAP HANA is particularly optimized for columnar storage. Column-based storage also helps perform parallel processing, which SAP HANA is best at, faster. Often, it uses hundreds of cores at the same time to perform it effectively. In SAP HANA, data-intensive and model-based calculations are performed on the index server and presentation logic is performed on the client.

SAP HANA database is the most cost-effective and productive database, which also uses cloud computing. It is certainly a boon for conglomerates.
