The Increasing Importance of Data Growth

big dataWith technology advancing in leaps and bounds, the use and production of data is seeing an exponential growth.  What is even more mind boggling is the rate at which data has been increasing.  There was only around 5 exabytes of data in the virtual world which grew more than 56 times in just seven years showing an estimated 281 exabytes of data in 2009.  It has been estimated that by 2020 the world can expect to see data 50 times more than it has now, and will need 10 times more servers.  Each year, media sectors expect their data to grow by at least 50% with financial sectors expecting the growth to shoot over 120%.  However, of all the total data that is being generated, over 75% is by individuals and around 80% of emails generated daily are all spam.

With data generation at its peak, businesses are seeing an ever increasing need to get their data organized and stored effectively.  Businesses, customers and the individuals want data to be stored and recorded so that it can be pulled out whenever they want it.  This has brought about the need for storage systems that can store infinite amounts of data effortlessly, and also the need for more IT administrators who can monitor the data growth.  This is made easy with platforms such as cloud, lightning fast networks and data centers.

To manage this huge amount of data, essential analytical services are required. Previously, analytical services were available to large organizations who could afford it.  Now the requirement is for all kinds of businesses and also for social networks like Facebook and Twitter, which have a user input of over 7 terabytes of data every day.  Businesses also need to process data that has not been stored and speed becomes a key component here to produce relevant answers that are crucial to the running of the business.

When the data that is processed and generated becomes too much for standard tools to handle, then it moves over to the category of “big data” from “plenty of data”.  Now is the time to come up with a plan that will take into consideration the future exponential data growth and prepare for business tools that will be able to process all of the data.
