Data Center Relocation: a few tips

data center moveMoving a Data Centre is not an easy task and a successful move will be the highlight of any employee as it involves almost all the departments in some way or the other.  Integrating all the jobs of the various departments and leaving nothing to chance is almost an impossible task and one will need to plan the move by taking into account inter-departmental communications, integration of technology and an all-comprising workable plan.  There are also many types of relocation such as a physical, virtual and a hybrid one.  However, a few tips will help one to complete the task successfully and it requires almost no high-skilled knowledge.

For a virtual relocation, take into account all the data, including current orders, deadlines and all business processes that are underway.  Identify all the data from the various departments and take it as whole so that no part is lost in the move.  You can cleanse the data before the move but doing it while the move is taking place is a risk.  Also try not to combine projects so that deadlines can be met and details will be kept safe.  Analyze the existing virtual environment and design a new one, which might need new equipment that must be bought before the move so that there is as little disruption as possible. The physical move can be simplified by tagging all the equipment and making a map of where each of them has to go in the new location.  Diagrams of room locations with the corresponding tags will eliminate the possibility of mistakes.

The hybrid move is perhaps the most complex of all moves as it involves moving from a physical location to a virtual environment like a cloud.  Careful examination of what has to be moved must be catalogued with decisions of what applications to be moved and where it should be moved taken beforehand.  Also any move has to meet with regulatory and security standards so that the business will not be in jeopardy because of the move. If one is unable to make the move, it is always better to call in the moving experts who will use specialized tools to make the process as simple and painless as possible.
