Keeping Business-Critical Applications at Maximum Efficiency in the Enterprise

In most enterprises there are opportunities for increased efficiency. This is especially true when it comes to those business-critical applications upon which the success of the entire information system rests. Yet, getting top performance from those applications isn’t always easy, and it most certainly isn’t intuitive.

Why it matters

It’s useful to stop for a moment and think about the reasons that an organization has and maintains an IT infrastructure. It’s easy to get so caught up in the details of IT that we can forget why IT exists in the first place. It’s not to run servers, install a network or to put computers on employee desks. It’s to provide enterprise applications to end users so they can more efficiently create products and services and run the business.

Twin imperatives

Application performance management and user experience monitoring are the two essential tools the enterprise uses to maximize efficiency:

  • Application performance management. If you’re going to keep your business critical applications up and running like they need to be, you need to identify which ones they are and then adequately monitor their performance. According to a recent study by the Aberdeen group, applications where performance is critical in most companies fall into one of five categories: email, line of business, document management, database and CRM. Downtime for any of these applications can lead to unhappy end users, lost revenues and damaged business opportunities.
  • User experience monitoring. Do you know how your end users perceive system performance? For many in IT management, this doesn’t necessarily seem like an important question. After all, user experience can be highly subjective. Believe it or not, how end users perceive the performance of business critical applications is at least as important as monitoring application performance. Just because your monitoring software shows adequate CPU usage and no network bottlenecks doesn’t mean users are able to use the application to the fullest extent of its abilities. Regular user interaction, feedback and surveys are essential to maintaining the highest levels of efficiency.

Your organization’s success depends on the efficiency of its business-critical applications. By implementing reliable application performance management and user experience monitoring tools, you help your organization stay competitive and effective.
