3 Benefits of a Smarter Networking Strategy for the Large Enterprise

The large enterprise presents some unique challenges in the area of networking. Modern network traffic is a lot more than just files and email. Our networks today support big data, virtual applications, and all sorts of real-time traffic like voice and video. The increasing demands have hit the large enterprise hardest in two areas: storage and networking. While storage seems to be moving along with demand thanks to technology, networking can be a bigger challenge.

Big problems

Large enterprises often face large networking problems. Among the most common today are:

•    Over-utilized network resources

•    The inability of the network to support growth (even planned growth)

•    A conspicuous absence of tools used to resolve critical events

•    Poor visibility in the area of network performance

•    Difficulty justifying the cost of the network

Each of these problems has their own solutions, and some have less to do with the actual technology being implemented in the large enterprise than they do with how the organization is being run.

Improving the network

There are a handful of ways large enterprises tend to try to improve their network strategies:

•    Increasing the capacity of the network

•    Building a new networking strategy from the ground up

•    Automating performance monitoring

•    Developing and implementing a strategy for mobile applications

•    Developing and implementing a strategy for the cloud

Some of these improvements are much easier said than done; it’s usually less of a hassle to begin automating performance monitoring than it is to develop effective cloud strategies, for example.

How to get there

There are three steps you need to take to make your network strategy smarter:

1.    Understand where you’re at. You need to know what your current situation is. What does your network currently provide? Where is it coming up short? Answering these questions gives you the data you need to move forward.

2.    Understand costs. You need to know where your networking dollars are going. You need to have a handle on what similar large enterprises are paying for their network services, and see if there are areas that are not worth the cost.

3.    Be ready to change. Emerging technologies can sometimes bring the most bang for your networking buck. Technologies and strategies unheard of just five years ago can provide both increased performance and cost savings.

Change can be scary, but the alternative is to fall woefully behind.
